President Trump Is Arresting His Political Opponents. Who’s Next?
Republicans are going to unprecedented lengths to silence and intimidate those who disagree with them
It is our constitutional right as Americans to express our political opinion without fear of our own government imprisoning us. So why is President Trump trying to arrest or deport anybody who disagrees with him?
This week, the Department of Justice is pressing charges against U.S. Congresswoman LaMonica McIver of Newark, New Jersey—all because she was upholding her sworn duty in elected office to oversee matters impacting her constituents.
Trump is not above the law, and it is our elected officials’ job to keep his power in check, which is precisely what Representative McIver was doing when she went on an official oversight inspection of an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) jail in her district to ensure the safety and well-being of those detained there.
This is a terrifying abuse of power. The unprecedented charges illustrate the dangerous lengths Republicans are willing to go to silence and intimidate those who disagree with the MAGA agenda.
But let’s be clear—this isn’t only about Rep. McIver. If President Trump can get away with arresting a sitting member of Congress, a judge, or an innocent student, he can arrest anybody.
In America, we do not arrest elected officials for expressing their political opinion and representing their constituents.
Rep. McIver is not the only public official facing retribution. The Trump administration has been escalating its political attacks, previously arresting Newark Mayor Ras Baraka and Hannah Dugan, a sitting judge in Wisconsin.
Trump’s abuse of federal power isn't just an abstract threat—it directly endangers the fundamental freedoms of all Americans. In fact, we’ve already seen this play out as students across the country get detained or have residency status revoked for exercising their right to dissent.
We won’t stay silent while Trump continues acting like a king. Call on your member of Congress to stand with Rep. McIver and demand accountability. Remind them they have the legal right and moral responsibility to conduct oversight visits at ICE detention facilities in their district. Check this map to see if there’s an ICE detention facility near you and call your Representative to ensure the safety and well-being of those being detained: 855-781-9885.

It's tragically ironic that Trump, having been found guilty on multiple counts, can skate by unscathed, while those simply following through on checks and balances are being arrested.
